An adventure hike is a self-guided hiking experience for adventurers who want to carry their own backpacks! It’s a great way to experience the true beauty of Fraser Island your way!

Hiking Adventure from the East to the West coast of K’gari!



DAY 1 – 4.1km
You will take a 4WD adventure transfer from Hervey Bay via the barge to the Eastern Beach of Fraser Island. Your transfer will drop you to the entrance of Lake Wabby, where you can enjoy a lunch stop. Then in the afternoon your hiking adventure begins with a short hike in Lake Wabby, once you’ve arrived relax by the stunning Lake Wabby or go to the lookout and enjoy a scenic view of the vast Eastern Beach. Set up your camp and spend the first night camping under the stars!

DAY 2 – 12km (optional 22.8km)
Wake up early and take a dip in the fresh morning water of Lake Wabby or go to the lookout and see the sunrise over the eastern beach, before having a quick breakfast and packing up camp ready for the next destination. Spend the second day hiking through untouched rainforest and old ancient eucalypt forest to the beautiful Lake McKenzie. Distance is approximately 12km or challenge yourself to the 22km option via Pile Valley, Central Station and Basin Lake. Once you have arrived at Lake McKenzie, set up camp and enjoy a splash in the lake at sunset. ​

DAY 2 – 13.8km
Spend the morning swimming at Lake McKenzie, also known by its indigenous name ‘Lake Boorangoora’. Enjoy the serenity of the secret hikers beach. Have lunch at fenced, picnic enclosures near the lake. Then hike from Lake McKenzie to Kingfisher Bay Resort enjoying the peaceful and calm nature as you hike back. Along the way you will stop by a historical site – McKenzie’s Jetty. Once you have arrived at the Kingfisher Jetty you are able to have a refreshing drink and snack, whilst you wait for your 4WD transfer back to Hervey Bay. ​

What to bring?

  • Sense of adventure; as the hiking part of this trip is self-guided!
  • Suitable walking/ hiking shoes
  • Lightweight food for all days on the hike
  • Small amount of personal belongings
  • A credit card imprint taken for security on hiking equipment supplied
  • Camera/ phone to take photos
  • Perosnal items e.g Swimmers, sunscreen, hat, sun glasses.
  • Torch
  • Water purification tablets
  • Insect repellent
  • Larger (1.5ltr) bottle to carry water.​

Additional Information

  • This hike departs Tuesdays and Thursdays ONLY
  • Average fitness level needed
  • Adventure hikers – carry their own gear for the duration of the hike
  • Minimum 2 people for the hike to run – maximum 6
  • Sleeping bags and rain jackets can be hired
  • Hike departs from our Fraser Dingo 4WD Adventures office in Urangan, Hervey Bay, at approx 8am (subject to change without warning).
  • Pickups available if f you have pre-arranged – conditions apply, hotel/ hostel in Urangan only.
  • 4WD transfer is with the tag-along tour (unless 5+ people, we will run a private vehicle).
  • Return on 5pm barge from Kingfisher Bay Resort (day 2), arrive FD office around 6:30pm.
  • This is a hiking tour/ 4WD transfer part way, hiking the remaining 2 days, distances up to 12km each day.

Note: At times there are NO toilet facilities and human waste must be buried at least 50cm deep. Fresh water is available at each camp but may have to be treated first.
