Where the 4WD’s can’t stay!

Day One – 6.6 km 

Enjoy a 4WD transfer into Central Station where you start your walk to Lake McKenzie. There is an optional side walk from Central Station to Pile Valley (an extra 4km return). On the way you will see the crystal clear Wanggoolba Creek, stop by the peaceful and beautiful Basin Lake before you arrive at the famous Lake McKenzie. You will then spend the night camping exclusively at the Lake McKenzie hikers camp, here you will be able to experience camping under the stars, and enjoy the peace and beauty of the lake at all hours including sunrise and sunset.

Day Two – 13.8 km

Spend the morning swimming at Lake McKenzie, also known by its indigenous name ‘Lake Boorangoora’. Enjoy the serenity of the secret hikers beach. Have lunch at fenced, picnic enclosures near the lake. Then hike from Lake McKenzie to Kingfisher Bay Resort enjoying the peaceful and calm nature as you hike back. Along the way you will stop by a historical site – McKenzie’s Jetty. Once you have arrived at the Kingfisher Jetty you are able to have a refreshing drink and snack, whilst you wait for your 4WD transfer back to Hervey Bay. ​

Departure Information

  • This is an enjoyable 2 days and 1 night Fraser Island eco hiking experience.
  • Average level fitness is required.
  • Departs every Tuesday and Thursday
  • Meet at our office in Urangan (Hervey Bay) at approx 8am for your barge transfer, travel on the barge/ferry from River Heads to Wanggoolba Creek on Fraser Islands West Coast, then a 4wd transfer to Central Station.
  • Accommodation pick ups are available.
  • Barge departure times: 10:15am
  • Camp at Lake McKenzie hikers camp, be the only people to enjoy the lake.
  • Barge return times: 5pm from Kingfisher Bay Resort (Day 2)

What is Included

  • Barge and 4wd transfer and picks/drop offs, all hiking equipment needed (tent, sleep mat, hiking cooker and pot, bowls, mugs etc), 70L hiking packs, permits and barge transfers, maps and itineraries.
  • Bring your own light weight food for hiking, small amount of personal belongings.
  • Sleeping bags and rain jackets additional $10 per item.
  • Small group guaranteed – maximum of 6 people per group.
  • Cancellations less than 7 Days prior to departure are non-refundable
  • Full payment is required to secure a booking
